ABSTRACT
Introduction: Electric burns are a serious pathology, with serious functional sequelae, being a rare etiology in burn centers. Knowing their epidemiology is essential to develop prevention programs, reducing their incidence.
Objective: To describe the epidemiology of burn patients in the National Center of Burns of Uruguay (CENAQUE).
Method: Descriptive study, including electrical burned patients of CENAQUE, from the opening of the center over 23 years (1995 to 2018). Demographic and clinical variables were recorded, analyzed by descriptive statistics (Student's t and chi-square).
Results: 185 burn patients were admitted (5.3% of the total), mostly men (92%), within a range of 15 to 35 years (75%). The management of high voltage cables was the main cause (36%). Sixty-one percent were high voltage injuries.
Conclusions: The electric burn generates great morbidity and work incapacity, generating significant cost to the state despite its low frequency.
