ABSTRACT
Introduction: Reconstruction of the tongue remains a challenging task for the plastic surgeon. In an attempt to obtain the best post-glossectomy functional reconstruction, we used the free functional gracilis muscle flap in patients undergoing surgical treatment of oral cavity cancer. Objective: Demonstrate the experience in tongue reconstruction with free functional flap of the gracilis muscle.
Method: In the period from 2009 to 2018, six patients underwent tongue reconstruction with free functional gracilis muscle flap. Patients were evaluated in the postoperative period for speech and swallowing capacity and the follow-up ranged from 4 months to 108 months.
Results: All six patients are successful in transferring the gracilis muscle flap to the defect and were able to swallow and speak without clinical or radiological signs of bronchoaspiration.
Conclusions: Reconstruction of the tongue after glossectomy with free and functional flap of the gracilis muscle is a safe option, with good long-term results and low morbidity for the donor area.
