ABSTRACT
Introduction: Mammoplasties are among the major plastic surgeries performed in Brazil. Although the patients presented preoperative imaging tests without alterations, there is the possibility of finding malignant lesions in the anatomopathological analysis of the resected part.
Objective: To analyze the results of anatomopathological examinations of patients submitted to mammoplasty, from 2012 to 2015.
Results: Of the 231 specimens, there were histopathological alterations in 200 (79.05%). The benign non-proliferative lesions were the main findings: stromal fibrosis 137 (54.1%), ductal ectasia 129 (50.9%); benign proliferative changes were uncommon, with only six cases: fibroadenoma was the main (three cases). In situ ductal carcinoma was not found.
Discussion: Malignant findings are rare, and routine histopathological analysis is at least questionable.
Conclusion: Anatomopathological evaluation of the surgical specimens of mammoplasties may be important for the detection of breast tissue changes without previous clinical manifestations, but in our series there were no cases of malignancies, and this conduct should be discussed.
