ABSTRACT
Background: The study's propose is to demonstrate the efficacy of the transpalpebral approach to the corrugator supercilii resection for glabellar treatment, using a technique based on Knize's surgery (with modifications). Method: The treatment has been performed in 23 patients of the Pedro Ernesto University Hospital of the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, with one year of post surgery review. The technique is based on the resection of the lateral and medial portions of the corrugator supercilii muscles, preserving the intermediate portion. The technique was done alone or associated with others face surgery procedures. Results: Local pain, edema and ecchymosis were found in the post operative period, compatible with the regular post surgery period in first weeks. Even if the partial movement of the glabellar was observed in 12 patients, in all cases there was attenuation or disappearance of the glabellar skin lines. Sixteen patients experienced transitory parestesy of forehead whose recovery occurred within six months. Other complications: unilateral hematoma (in one case) and depression in corrugator supercilii muscles site (in one case). All these complications had been solved satisfactorily; in the first case, the hematoma was evacuated and, in the second one, a lipoenxerty was performed. Conclusions: The advantages of using the technique described above instead of the botulinum toxin (with transitory effect), the coronal incision approach or endoscopic techniques are: smaller surgery, less unwanted post operative side effects and faster recovery when compared with Knize's description.
