ABSTRACT

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is a rare cutaneous tumor of low malignant grade, characterized by a pattern of slow, infiltrative growth and a marked tendency to recur locally after surgical excision. The high rate of recurrence of this tumor is correlated with poor surgical management because lesions may be confused with dermatofibroma or keloid. This article reviews dermatofibrosarcoma with particular emphasis on the epidemiologic, clinical, and histological features of diagnosis, as well as treatment modalities and prognosis. This review confirms the importance of accurate diagnosis of primary lesion and the need for aggressive surgical treatment (excision of 3 cm of surrounding tissue) to lower the incidence of local relapse.
