Letters to the Editor - Year2011 - Volume26 - Issue 3

Ricardo Baroudi
Editor in Chief of the Revista Brasileira de Cirurgia Plástica (Brazilian Journal of Plastic Surgery)

Dear Dr. Baroudi,

I would like to express my gratitude for the publication of the article entitled "Gluteoplastia de aumento: a importância do ensino na formação atual do residente frente à demanda crescente" (Enhancement gluteoplastia: the importance of teaching in the current residence program to attend this rising demand) in the Revista Brasileira de Cirurgia Plástica / Brazilian Journal of Plastic Surgery (Rev Bras Cir Plast. 2011; 26 (1):127-33). I would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Fernando Serra for his relevant assistance provided to all resident physicians of the Hospital dos Servidores of Rio de Janeiro State (Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil) of the Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil. In response to an invitation from our Director, Dr. Serra presented an extremely didactic lecture on gluteoplasty that included a detailed and elegant demonstration of a surgical case in our institution, teaching us all the steps in the treatment of gluteal hypoplasia with the use of implants, which contributed greatly to the development of our work.

I believe it is important to read Dr. Serra's paper, which I mistakenly did not include among the references of our work: Serra F, Aboudib JH, Cedrola JP, de Castro CC. Gluteoplasty: anatomic basis and technique. Aesthet Surg J. 2010;30(4):579-92.

Sincerely,

Comments related to the article entitled "Simetria nasal após a realização de rinoplastia associada à queiloplastia em crianças com fissura labial e labiopalatal" ("Nose symmetry after rhinoplasty associated with cheiloplasty in children with lip and labiopalatal cleft")

Dear editors,

I would like to congratulate the authors of the article "Nose symmetry after rhinoplasty associated with cheiloplasty in children with lip and labiopalatal cleft" 1, which was published in issue 26.1 of the Revista Brasileira de Cirurgia Plástica (Brazilian Journal of Plastic Surgery), for their interesting results. Rhinoplasty is an important step in the reconstruction of cleft palate.

However, I would like to highlight a few aspects of this procedure. The evaluation could have also been performed by another professional other than the surgeon to be more accurate and less personal. Ideally, 2 evaluators could have made measurements of the photos provided that the obtained Kappa index values had an agreement exceeding 75%2,3.

Normally, the Kappa index is classified as low (0-0.5), moderate (0.51-0.75), or excellent (0.76-1.00). In addition, it is interesting to adopt a stratification of the horizontal and vertical measurements, which enables the analysis and discussion of the forces acting on each vector/direction.

Sincerely,

Ciro Paz Portinho
