The instruments used to disseminate medical knowledge based on publications of scientific journals have changed radically in the last two decades.
The real-time dissemination of information through the Internet and the entrepreneurial policies of open access to journals and their contents have become increasingly common.
The importance of updating and compliance with these new operating rules carries with it the need for changes in all processes involved in the publication of scientific articles, linking tools that enable categorization, ease of search, and broad access to the studies.
With this aim, the Brazilian Journal of Plastic Surgery (Revista Brasileira de Cirurgia Plástica (RBCP)) informs all employees, authors, and readers, of the implementation of a new system of submission, review, and publication, called GNPapers®.
SUBMISSION OF ARTICLES
The system displays a more practical and intuitive interface in Portuguese and English. In addition to being responsive, it is accessible from any mobile device, such as a tablet, smartphone, and laptop. Author registration is open and simple, and submission is performed in accordance with the norms of the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and PubMed Central (PMC). Moreover, it enables queries in real time based on Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS - for journals in the field of health) and gives the author the ability to report potential conflicts of interest, financing, ethics committee approval number, and clinical trial registration number1. With this new implementation, copyrighting will be electronic, and will include the terms of acceptance of RBCP criteria.
This new system works with an upload process, allowing the attachment of a text document, eliminating the need to copy and paste the contents of an article into various fields, and also has auxiliary tools for inserting and editing images, in addition to performing validation of the quality of the images.
The submission of articles using GNPapers® offers a self-explanatory interface, to provide contextualized information to the user. The user simply positions the mouse cursor over an icon or link and a popup information balloon guides through the procedure expected. Furthermore, in other stages of the submission, the system presents examples of acceptable and unacceptable entries to the authors.
The submission system will assist the author to create a structured article, in accordance with the guidelines and with a scientific structure that will make its acceptance more feasible.
From now on, when submitting a manuscript, the author can use his or her ORCID identifier. The ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID, www.orcid.com) is a permanent digital identifier that distinguishes the author from all other researchers and, by integrating key research workflows such as manuscript and grant submissions, supports automated links between the author and his/her professional activities, ensuring that the work is recognized. ORCID is a non-profit organization that helps create a framework in which everyone who participates in the study is identified and connected exclusively to their contributions and affiliations in all disciplines, boundaries, and time frames2.
AUTHORS CAN EASILY CORRECT THEIR ARTICLES
After the review, when requested to correct an article, the author will receive the opinions of the reviewers. The reviewers and/or editors may place comments on parts of the document, making the correction process richer from the author's point of view. The author may respond to each review criterion adopted, providing more transparency by enabling a correction, or even justifying the non-fulfilment of the reviewers' or editors' suggestions.
All system processes have defined deadlines that change as the article progresses in the flow. The editor can thus control the pre-defined limits, and thus facilitate the speed of the process to the extent that he/she controls both the flow of articles and the efficiency of the reviewers. The role of the Reviewer becomes more valued and the system automatically provides a certificate to the Reviewer who carries out a review in an appropriate way and within the deadline.
The RBCP works in search of the excellence of its scientific content, in order to consolidate the specialty in the universe of evidence-based Medicine.http://www.gn1.com.br/sistemas/gnpapers
